IN BETWEEN

ACRYLIC, MIRROR, DRIFTWOOD, FOG MACHINE

2024

Have you ever felt like you are stuck in between something, like being in a room filled with mist? Often, we find ourselves in intermediary states, which are hard to perceive. I use natural elements to visualise the invisible but actual liminal psychological feelings. I made a mist box interactive installation, which is also a liminal space, to invite people to embrace the unknown and uncertainty. Being in between can be tough; we might feel down, frustrated, or scared. But it's not a scary thing. All we need to do is wait. Eventually, clarity will emerge, the mist will dissipate. Maybe passing through this veil is being reborn. Visitors are invited into a liminal space, facing a transparent box containing driftwood and a mirror. Mist represents the transient obstacles in the intermediate state, while driftwood symbolises the traveller's quest for stability and belonging. As the mist clears, revealing one's reflection alongside the driftwood, the installation offers a metaphor for finding clarity and self-discovery amidst change. It encourages embracing the potential of the unknown and the unseen, highlighting the resilience and beauty in transitional states.

The installation consists of mist, mirror and driftwood. The psychological feelings of the audience experiencing the work correspond to the three stages of the liminal state, which are anticipation, loss, and return. The audience waits in anticipation for the experience to arrive, and by controlling the spray, they give themselves a limited but definite degree of initiative and control. It's a moment of dialogue with oneself, sensing the potential of an unspoken space.

The piece has been exhibited at Brompton Cemetery and Asylum Chapel in London.
